Composed by:

Karen Kirkland

Karen Kirkland is a professional musician and teacher with over 30 years experience in music education.” My best friend” is a humorous, fun song about “creepy crawlies”. Children love collecting insects or ‘creepy crawlies’ and keeping them in match boxes or shoe boxes. Adults, especially mum, don’t usually share the same enthusiasm for these new ‘best friends’. Mum is very relieved when the creatures are put back outside where they belong. The catchy melody and repetition make this an easy song to learn.

This song is suitable for KS1 and KS2 and is a perfect song to introduce a project on insects. There is a full backing track available of this song, with or without vocals, on request. This song is part of a series of songs written for a project called “Shropshire sings” involving over 2000 KS1/2 children in Shropshire, and will be premiered at this event in July by Shropshire music service.

My best friend

I’ve got a new best friend. The best friend ever is he.
Creeping crawling over me. Can you guess who it must be?
I’ve got a new best friend. The best friend ever is he.
Don’t be shy, come and see who this best friend must be.

A hundred legs, a hundred feet, a hundred hairy knees.
Don’t be shy, come and see, cheeky centipede, that’s he.

Eight long legs, scary fangs, eight fat wobbly knees.
Don’t be shy, come and see, incy, wincy spider, that’s he.

Got no legs, one flat foot, slip and slide does he.
Don’t be shy, come and see, slimy slug, that’s he

Six short legs, six flat feet, six spiky knees.
Don’t be shy, come and see, hungry caterpillar, that’s he.

(Last Chorus)
I’ve got a new best friend. The best friend ever is he.
Creeping, crawling over me. Can you guess who it must be?
I’ve got a new best friend. The best friend ever is he.
Mum is glad, I am sad, my best friend now is free.

The use of music and singing as a cross curriculum educational tool is well documented. Teachers can use singing to support different subjects across the curriculum, including science, english, language, art, drama, geography, history and maths. Songs are an engaging stimulus and starting point for many activities, inspiring creativity across all learning. This song is a great starting point for a science project or a project on insects. It’s also just fun to sing.

Suitable for KS1/2, junior choirs.
