“Let the children play” written by Karen Kirkland. This composition is an environmental themed song inspired by television coverage of the Bosnia war. It was composed after watching black and white pictures of children in Bosnia dealing with the consequences of war. This song has been used by Carlton TV in their “Central News” programme as part of a project ” The Alternative Song For Europe”.
It is a thoughtful reflection on the beauty of our earth, seen by the birds, the sun and the moon. With some wonderful harmonies in the minor key, a lovely melody and emotional, clever lyrics, this song is very different to the normal school repertoire. There is a full vocal version and separate full instrumental backing track available on request with a saxophone solo included.
“All around the world the birds will fly and I wonder what they see as they fly by.
Looking downwards from their place on high. I wonder if they cry.
For the world is such a lovely place, but time will show her anxious face.
There must be a reason. I don’t know why.
Let the little children live for today with love without the pain and sorrow.
Let the little children play their games of love. There may be no tomorrow.”
“The mountains roll along beneath their feet.
The sun beats down and warms them with its precious heat……….”.
“The moon is gazing down upon its friend watching over it until the very end…”.
“For the world is such a lovely place, floating in its sea of space ………”.
This song has been arranged for solo voice, school, youth choir ( SAA), community choir and audition choir ( SATB). It is suitable for KS2, secondary school and adults.
