Chiming bells is an original a-cappella carol. It can be sung with or without accompaniment. It is in the form of an Ostinato and beautifully reflects the atmosphere of Christmas. It was originally written as a short warm up piece for a vocal workshop but by popular demand it has now been extended to be a wonderful vocal piece in its own right. It has also been rearranged for instruments and was used very successfully at a children’s keyboard workshop.
The piece can be sung by up to five different voices. Each voice has a different melody and words, four bars long and two phrases. The Ostinato, a continually repeated musical phrase, means that the song is easy to learn and when combined with the other voices, produces a lovely melody and rich harmonies. The sound of the bells is passed around the voices and each part can have a go at the tune.
Cleverly written, this simple piece beautifully recreates the sound of the chiming bells and has actually be performed with chiming bells and hand bells. This piece can be used by all ages and abilities. They just need to remember their own part. Chiming bells can be used very effectively as the opening piece for a Christmas performances, sometimes even sung off stage.
