Karen Kirkland is a professional musician and teacher with over 30 years experience in music education.” Going to see Grandma” is a humorous, fun song about transport for KS1 and KS2. We are going on a journey to visit Grandma using various means of transport but several obstacles get in our way. The well know phrase ” Are we there yet?” and “Just around the corner” are used in the chorus. Repetition, the catchy melody and the use of humour make this song easy and fun to learn.

There is a full backing track available of this song, with or without vocals, on request. This song is part of a series of songs written for a project called “Shropshire sings” involving over 2000 KS1/2 children in Shropshire, and will be premiered at this event in July by Shropshire music service.

Going to see Grandma

We’re going to the seaside sitting in the car
Stuck in a traffic jam. Not gone very far.
Going to see Grandma, I wish she’d come to us.
Stuck in a traffic jam. Lets all go by bus.

Are we there yet? Can you see the sea?
Just around the corner, that’s what they tell me.
Are we there yet? Can you see the sea?
Just around the corner, that’s what they tell me.

We’re going to the seaside sitting on a bus
Stop at every bus stop. Never in a rush.
Going to see Grandma, I wish she’d come to us.
Stuck in a jam again. Lets all go by plane

We’re going to the seaside sitting on a plane.
Stuck in the airport. Queuing once again.
Going to see Grandma, I wish she’d come to us.
Stuck in a queue again Lets all go by train.

We’re going to the seaside sitting on a train.
Stuck in the station. Here we go again.
Going to see Grandma, I wish she’d come to us.
Stuck again, what a pain, please don’t make a fuss.

Are we there yet? Can you see the sea?
Just around the corner, that’s what they tell me
Are we there yet? Can you see the sea?
Next year grandma, you can come to me.

The use of music and singing as a cross curriculum educational tool is well documented. Teachers can use singing to support different subjects across the curriculum, including science, english, language, art, drama, geography, history and maths. Songs are an engaging stimulus and starting point for many activities, inspiring creativity across all learning. This song is a great starting point for a project on transport. It’s also just fun to sing.
