Ricky goes to Antarctica project

Most children and teachers do not have the chance to experience extreme environments such as those found in Antarctica. Ricky received an invitation by the Fuchs Foundation to go to Antarctica, accompanied by primary teacher Lisa Wood (who was one of the teachers involved in the PUPPETS Project research). This provided an exciting opportunity to work with ASE, Des Dunne and Lisa to support Ricky and Lisa’s travels. It also allowed Brenda Keogh and Stuart Naylor, and colleagues in Millgate House Education, to explore how electronic media could extend the reach of the PUPPETS project.

The outcome is that Ricky has created his own blog (with a bit of help from his friends) where he can share ideas, problems and questions with children. They in turn investigate ideas, raise questions and find ways to help Ricky on his adventure.

The blog provides a free interactive resource for children and teachers in primary schools around the world. It is created and managed by the Millgate House Education team. Teachers in Newham have been involved in generating some of the ideas for the blog as part of an AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust CPD project.

The blog has generated considerable interest and provoked great enthusiasm in the schools that became involved. Two of the ASE PrimaryUpd8 activities also feature Ricky’s journey. Brenda Keogh, Stuart Naylor and Lisa Wood have provided CPD workshops to share Ricky’s virtual journey with teachers across the UK.

The Ricky goes to Antarctica blog remains live as a resource for future use by schools. Ricky is ready and waiting to respond to ideas. We are excited that Ricky has been invited to go on other adventures. Watch our website for news!
