What is the Rational Food Project?
It links together science and history in a highly creative way
It uses World War 2 as a context to raise issues about nutrition and healthy eating
It draws on research carried out at the Rowett Research Institute and schools in Aberdeenshire
It is supported by a range of innovative resources
It uses Active Assessment strategies to challenge and develop children’s ideas

What are its aims?
To help children experience science in a real context
To provide an opportunity for children to use real scientific data in a purposeful way
To develop an understanding of social issues relating to World War 2
To explore the concept of rationing and its relationship with health
To support children in making informed decisions about nutrition and healthy eating
To support teachers in teaching a coherent cross curricular theme

A structured outline to support them in planning an exciting cross-curricular project
An extensive range of thought-provoking activities
Photocopiable resources, including archive material from the 1930s and authentic research data from the Rowett Research Institute
A CD with printable resources
A DVD with video clips to use as a stimulus for discussion and activity

What about professional development?
Teachers can get access to relevant professional development in how to use the material
Project materials are available at a reduced cost through CPD sessions
CPD sessions are hosted by organisations such as local authorities, Science Learning Centres, Association for Science Education, science specialist schools and school clusters
