Here are some examples of our current or recent projects:
| Rational Food |
The Rational Food Project has been created with colleagues at the Rowett Research Institute, University of Aberdeen. It uses Active Assessment strategies to challenge and develop children’s ideas about nutrition and diet. Issues about rationing in World War II bring together science, history and healthy eating in a unique cross-curricular project. Extracts from 1930’s food diaries, and other archive material, help children to make better decisions in their own lives.

The
PUPPETS Project
Talking Science, Engaging Science |
This project is funded by GlaxoSmithKline and is aimed at primary teachers across the UK. It is based on research funded by the Nuffield Foundation and carried out with Shirley Simon & Jane Maloney (IoE, London) and Brigid Downing (MMU). Through the project teachers have a unique opportunity to obtain puppets, stories and professional development at low cost. The project runs from September 2006 until July 2009.

| BA CREST Star Investigators Award |
Millgate House has been commissioned by the British Association (the BA) to restructure and rewrite its young people’s CREST programme. The programme targets children in out of school hours learning, such as Science Clubs. We are working with a team of writers (Jayne Barnes, Tanya Shields, Nicky Waller, Sue Wright) to create engaging activities that young people will enjoy and that will help them to learn science.
The project was launched successfully in September 2007. Initial reactions from both adults and children are highly positive.

Cartoons in Science & Maths |
Concept Cartoons in science were first to arrive. Funding from several professional organisations and GlaxoSmithKline enabled us to train 4000 teachers across the UK and provide them with Concept Cartoon resources, from 2000-2003. Now the Concept Cartoon family has been extended into mathematics, and these are being very positively received by teachers. We are working on a book and CD for Concept Cartoons in English, with Concept Cartoons in humanities to follow.
