Cartoons in Mathematics Education (book) |
Written at Millgate House Education by John Dabell, Brenda Keogh & Stuart Naylor
£40.00
Ten years after exploring Concept Cartoons in mathematics for the first time, the new member of the Concept Cartoon family has arrived. The first venture into Concept Cartoons in mathematics was in 1998 with Janet Mock. Janet has used them since then in her work as a lecturer at Western Washington University, USA. The following year we worked with colleagues at Manchester Metropolitan University to help create Concept Cartoons for Maths on the Metro. This was a project similar to Science on the Underground, with mathematical Concept Cartoon posters appearing on the metro trains in Greater Manchester during the Year of Maths 2000. |

|
More recently we have worked with John Dabell to create the wide-ranging set that is now available as Concept Cartoons in Mathematics Education. John joined the Millgate House Education team to contribute his ideas and enthusiasm and take a lead role in writing. Other contributors to the publication include Costel Harnasz, Gordon Stainsby, Melvyn Cole, and groups of teachers and advisers in Edinburgh and North Yorkshire, led by Peter Gorrie and John Crosland.
Concept Cartoons promote more effective teaching, learning and assessment in mathematics. They use cartoon-style drawings in which different characters offer their views.
Teachers find that they are highly motivating for pupils, that they provide opportunities for discussion and argument and that they are easy to use in the classroom as a part of normal teaching.
The book has 130 black and white A4 photocopiable Concept Cartoons covering the main areas of maths. Each Concept Cartoon comes with background text to explain the maths behind the different alternatives and to suggest possible follow up activities.
Each Concept Cartoon has a blank speech bubble to encourage learners to add additional ideas to the discussion.
