‘Children have never had so much fun learning about science enquiry.’

Science Enquiry Games is an inspiring and motivating resource designed to help children in primary schools develop and consolidate their understanding of science enquiry. The photocopiable book contains 9 strategies that can be used in various ways to help children review and develop science enquiry skills.
Each strategy is based around games where children get actively involved. At least two alternative approaches are presented for each strategy (e.g. children moving around the room version, or play on table top version).

Electronic (PDF) versions of all resources needed to play the highly active games are included on the accompanying CD.

Are you short of ideas for getting your pupils to engage with text and want to help them develop techniques to support their use of written material? This course will explore a variety of interactive strategies that will support pupils in engaging with books, websites and the media.

These strategies are really good for helping them to get the most out of their text books and revision guides. (Secondary teacher, West Midlands)

This term our teacher has showed us how to turn the reading bits into pictures and tables and then it makes more sense. Now we can remember the bits we’re supposed to have learned. (Secondary pupil, West Midlands)

Working with text can be problematic for many pupils. Without some strategies to decode the text and extract relevant information, the potential for learning can be lost.

This course sets out to demonstrate how reading can be used to enhance learning. It also offers you an opportunity to explore and evaluate the strengths of different reading strategies, all of which help pupils to develop independence when looking at different forms of written information.

You will return to school with a wide variety of ideas for increasing the accessibility of text and using it in engaging and productive ways.

On this course you will:

Explore and identify how reading can be used to promote learning in science

Develop a repertoire of active reading techniques

Consider how the process of transforming text supports pupils’ scientific understanding.

Target audience:

Subject leaders, teachers, teaching assistants and trainee teachers working with pupils age 11–16

The course lasts for half a day. However, it can be tailored to meet the needs of your organisation and delivered as two shorter training opportunities.

Do your pupils struggle with data? Do you struggle to make it fun? This course looks at ways of making data collection and handling accessible to all. A pacy and interactive training experience, aimed at practical techniques you will want to start using tomorrow.

This training was very informative with some great ideas, such as the enquiry games. The use of the large planning sheets in open-ended investigations and the big graphs idea were very good.

Working from first principles, this course looks at how to engage pupils in wanting to find the answer to stimulating problems. It takes you through planning for successful data capture, and explores how pupils can be supported in understanding that the decisions they make about variables early on can influence the quality of their investigative outcomes.

It also focuses on the development of graphing skills through activities and games. It develops strategies for supporting pupils’ recognition of patterns and trends, and draws this together in a model of how good conclusions are formed, linking this back to the original problem.

Your pupils will soon be applying their data handling skills in all investigations and finding all sorts of information in their graphs!

On this course you will:

Explore strategies for developing pupils’ understanding of the role of data in science

Consider ideas for developing effective recording techniques

Learn how to support pupils in developing graphing skills in an engaging way

Be able to teach pupils how to write effective conclusions through discussion and collaborative writing.

Target audience:

Subject leaders, teachers, teaching assistants and trainee teachers working with pupils age 11–16

The course lasts for a full day. However, it can be tailored to meet the needs of your organisation and delivered as a series of shorter training opportunities.

Are you looking for ideas to help pupils understand some of the most difficult and abstract scientific ideas? This course will provide opportunities to explore different types of models and their potential to enhance pupils’ understanding of science.

A very useful day. Lots of practical, hands on ideas to promote learning. Now I can see how role play can be really useful.

This course sets out to demonstrate how models and model making can be used to support, develop and extend pupils’ scientific thinking and understanding. You will use a variety of increasingly sophisticated models and analogies to consider how the process of describing, testing and evaluating can extend pupils’ understanding of scientific ideas and phenomena.

On this course you will:

Enhance your knowledge of how models can promote learning

Explore different types of modelling in science

Consider how models evolve throughout the learning process

Use kinaesthetic models and role play in a range of scientific contexts.

Are your pupils reluctant thinkers? With tried and tested strategies and clever scaffolding their confidence will grow, and soon they’ll be thinking before they know it!

This course considers how developing the ‘big picture’ in science supports a holistic understanding of the subject, and how thinking frameworks and tools are an important part of developing this broader scientific understanding. It explores how we can help pupils develop this holistic view, where connections and interrelationships are identified and used to promote a firm grasp of the subject. We will look at the vital role of speaking and listening in this process and explore activities designed to promote productive talk.

On this course you will:

Experience a wide variety of thinking frameworks that can be used to develop understanding

Think about how developing the ‘big picture’ can assist pupils in making connections between different elements of their learning

Consider how developing a supportive climate for learning encourages pupils to express their thinking and explore their ideas

Experience some effective talk activities that can be used to support progression.
