This course is based on research but addresses fundamental issues of classroom practice. It raises questions, such as how do you recognise a good lesson and what prevents every lesson from being a good lesson, and offers clear pointers to improving classroom practice. It recognises that manageability is central to changing practice, so the emphasis throughout the course is on strategies that are quick, simple and effective. In other words, it’s about working smarter, not working harder.
On this course you will:
- Identify important principles that are essential for effective teaching, assessment and learning
- Find out how to promote thinking, talking and discussion in the classroom
- Learn creative and manageable ways to reveal and develop pupils’ ideas
- Understand how to link assessment with learning in a way that is manageable
- Find out about relevant recent research that makes a difference in classrooms
- Discover small changes that can make a big difference to classroom practice
- Find ways of making changes in classroom practice manageable
- Be excited about the possibility of transforming teaching and learning in your organisation
Target audience:
Teachers, subject leaders, subject coordinators, headteachers, teacher educators, trainee teachers, teaching assistants and consultants/advisers
This course usually lasts a full day and benefits from follow-up session/s where possible. It can be run for a half day in some circumstances. It will be tailored to meet the needs of your organisation rather than ‘off the shelf’.

Charges are calculated on a course by course basis, but are typically between £450 and £950 per day, plus expenses, depending on the size of the organisation and number of people attending. Special subsidised rates apply to some of our courses and for trainee teachers.
