Transforming science enquiry in primary classrooms

I think we have a very restricted view of science in our school and have been depriving pupils of important ways of experiencing science. The bonus is that it also makes science planning easier for us. (Primary science coordinator, Leeds)

How often do your pupils engage in science enquiry that isn’t a fair test? This course focuses on the other types of science enquiry: what they are, how they can be developed from different starting points, and how you can build different types of science enquiry into your teaching. It also focuses on the links between using different types of enquiry and how pupils develop their science knowledge and understanding. It will help you to provide a richer and broader range of science activities in the classroom.

Resources to support science enquiry are available at a discounted cost as part of the course.

On this course you will:

  • Gain access to a wide range of starting points for science enquiry
  • Explore a range of approaches to science enquiry and develop your confidence in using them
  • Learn how to engage learners and develop their science skills in ways that are easily manageable
  • Consider how to ensure that developing science enquiry skills is closely linked to developing understanding of science ideas
  • Learn how to recognise when pupils are thinking and learning
  • Learn how to recognise when science is working well in the classroom.
