Are you short of ideas for getting your pupils to engage with text and want to help them develop techniques to support their use of written material? Working with text can be problematic for many pupils. Without some strategies to decode the text and extract relevant information, the potential for learning can be lost.
This course will explore a variety of interactive strategies that will support pupils in engaging with books, websites and the media. It sets out to demonstrate how reading can be used to enhance learning. It also offers you an opportunity to explore and evaluate the strengths of different reading strategies, all of which help pupils to develop independence when looking at different forms of written information.
You will gain with a wide variety of ideas for increasing the accessibility of text and using it in engaging and productive ways.
On this course you will:
- Explore and identify how reading can be used to promote learning in science
- Develop a repertoire of active reading techniques
- Consider how the process of transforming text supports pupils’ scientific understanding.
Target audience:
Subject leaders, teachers, teaching assistants and trainee teachers working with pupils age 11–16
The course lasts for half a day. However, it can be tailored to meet the needs of your organisation and delivered as two shorter training opportunities.

Charges are calculated on a course by course basis, but are typically between £350 and £600 per half day, plus expenses, depending on the size of the organisation and number of people attending. Special subsidised rates apply to some of our courses and for trainee teachers.
