Structuring thinking through frameworks, mapping and talk

Are your pupils reluctant thinkers? With tried and tested strategies and clever scaffolding their confidence will grow, and soon they’ll be thinking before they know it! This course considers how developing the ‘big picture’ in science supports a holistic understanding of the subject, and how thinking frameworks and tools are an important part of developing this broader scientific understanding. It explores how we can help pupils develop this holistic view, where connections and interrelationships are identified and used to promote a firm grasp of the subject. We will look at the vital role of speaking and listening in this process and explore activities designed to promote productive talk.

On this course you will:

  • Experience a wide variety of thinking frameworks that can be used to develop understanding
  • Think about how developing the ‘big picture’ can assist pupils in making connections between different elements of their learning
  • Consider how developing a supportive climate for learning encourages pupils to express their thinking and explore their ideas
  • Experience some effective talk activities that can be used to support progression.

Target audience:

Subject leaders, teachers, teaching assistants and trainee teachers working with pupils age 11–16

The course lasts for a full day. However, it can be tailored to meet the needs of your organisation and delivered as a series of shorter training opportunities.
