Science in context: making it real, making it relevant

Lots of ideas to take back to school and start using tomorrow. Thank you.

Many pupils report that their best science lessons are the ones that make links with their everyday lives. This course allows you to identify the hooks that grab their attention and make science relevant, engaging and exciting based on their lives and experiences at home and in the local surroundings. We will focus on the importance of promoting discussion and debate relevant to contexts that interest pupils today. We will also evaluate and develop strategies to support discussion, decision making and debate.

On this course you will:

  • Explore ways of motivating learners by using real contexts
  • Consider a variety of ways to highlight the links between pupils’ everyday lives and science
  • Experience ways to support pupils in evaluating different viewpoints.

Target audience:

Teachers, teaching assistants and trainee teachers working with pupils age 11–16

The course lasts for a full day. However, it can be tailored to meet the needs of your organisation and delivered as a series of shorter training opportunities.
