Increasing engagement through the use of videos and images.

It’s brilliant! This is such a simple idea but so motivational. I just know my pupils are going to love this idea and learn without realising they are working! (teacher West Midlands)

Do you want to hook in reluctant learners whilst helping them to develop the skills needed for sharing their thoughts in a structured and sequenced way? This is an interactive and practical course that allows you to capitalise on the excitement that pupils associate with technology, and experience the ways in which images can support pupils’ learning in science. It allows you to explore the motivational and learning gains that can be made when pupils are given the opportunity to make short, simple video presentations. You will experience the excitement and creativity that pupils demonstrate time and time again when learning in this way.

The course identifies how the use of images can support learning whilst highlighting the pitfalls that may occur when pupils first encounter diagrams that we take for granted. Strategies are offered to help you avoid the pitfalls these diagrams can create.

Whilst developing these strategies to support pupils’ learning, you will also consider the types of scaffolding needed to help pupils develop the skill of appreciating other viewpoints, creating balanced arguments and getting the most from visual information.

On this course you will:

  • Explore the way the use of images can support pupils’ learning in science
  • Experience the motivational effect that video work can have in the classroom
  • Consider the conventions found in scientific images and diagrams and discover how these could reinforce misconceptions
  • Evaluate different types of scaffolding to support the pupils’ skill development with respect to sharing their understanding of scientific ideas and phenomena.

Target audience:

Upper primary and secondary teachers, teaching assistants and trainee teachers

The course lasts for a full day. However, it can be tailored to meet the needs of your organisation and therefore delivered as a series of shorter training opportunities.
