Are you sitting comfortably? Stories as a starting point for learning science

Fantastic! Wonderful ideas to work with. (Primary teacher, Somerset)

Do you enjoy using stories as a starting point for learning? Here’s an opportunity for a new look at how to inspire science learning through a range of stories. This popular, interactive course takes stories as its starting point – not just the Very Hungry Caterpillar, but new stories specifically designed to support effective science learning in school. It draws on research into effective ways of engaging pupils and supporting their science learning. The course will illustrate how to use stories creatively to make science lessons more engaging and meaningful for pupils, and help them to think more, talk more, enjoy science more and learn more.

Engaging storybooks and CDs are available at a discounted cost as part of the course.

On this course you will:

  • Gain experience of using stories as starting points for science
  • Use stories to explore what makes science teaching effective
  • Learn strategies to make the most effective use of stories
  • Learn how to use talk to enrich learning from stories

Target audience:

Primary teachers, headteachers, teaching assistants and trainee teachers

This course generally lasts half a day but can be longer or combined with other courses. It will be tailored to meet the needs of your organisation rather than ‘off the shelf’.
